Total Solar Eclipse 2024
On April 8th, a celestial event will captivate sky-watchers and eclipse chasers across America as a total solar eclipse crosses our nation. This marks the first total eclipse visible in America since 2017.
The eclipse path of totality will go over communities from Texas through Maine, touching the states of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire and will be covered in complete darkness.
The total solar eclipse history in 2017 was experienced in Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
The April 8th eclipse will last approximately 2 1/2 hours in totality, with a maximum duration of four minutes for those positioned within the center of the eclipse path, which spans about 150 miles wide.
States not within the path of totality will still witness a partial eclipse. Still, only those within the path will experience complete darkness. The temperatures may also drop during the eclipse, and it is advised that individuals dress appropriately for cooler conditions, just in case.
Historical data from previous eclipses indicates that roadway backups ranging from 6 to 19 hours occurred during and immediately after the eclipse.
Communities within the path of the total solar eclipse can expect an influx of visitors. There will be high demand for parking spaces, and some stadiums and public locations will host viewing parties. Additionally, due to the distraction caused by the eclipse, there may be a risk of increased criminal activity.
Ensuring that all vehicles are filled with gas in advance is imperative. Consider staying at home or selecting a viewing location where the immediate departure is unnecessary due to anticipated traffic congestion.
Safe viewing practices involve looking directly at the sun only during the brief totality phase when the moon completely obstructs the sun. Special solar eclipse glasses should be used at all other times to prevent eye damage from staring directly at the sun.
Purchase safety glasses in advance to avoid price gouging and ensure availability. Expect travel challenges before, during, and after the eclipse, with local populations potentially swelling four to five times their usual size.
Many communities will host eclipse events, increasing the demand for parking and emphasizing the importance of safety precautions.
Establish a communication plan in case you are separated from your group or family during large gatherings, considering the potential for disrupted cell service due to high usage.
It is essential to have an emergency kit prepared for both the home and your vehicle, including medication, batteries, blankets, a change of clothing, snacks, and water.
Allow a few days for the local population to return to normalcy, and ensure adequate supplies at home, including a full gas tank and sufficient food and water.
Avoid scheduling appointments until after the eclipse’s effects have dissipated, as temperatures may drop by as much as 10 degrees during the event.
A total solar eclipse only occurs approximately once every 375 years, making this a rare and memorable experience. Safety, caution, and preparedness are essential and should be the priority for enjoying this celestial event.
Enjoy, and be safe out there!

The shirts were designed by my son, who is currently a freshman in college. Any money earned goes towards his college education. I will not allow him to take out any student loans. If you purchase one, thank you. Also, solar eclipse glasses are available on Amazon very cheaply.
